Guide To Roleplaying

Here I will address most items involving roleplaying in hopes to establish a roleplaying community to turn to for a good roleplay. Please forgive me if I sound tired, accidentally make things short, or leave things out, but this is the second time I've typed the whole thing up (I believe the first time would have proven to be more thorough). Thank you.
Roleplaying: Roleplaying is considered the act of creating a story with many users and characters. There are three literacy levels usually involved which separate and categorize the roleplays and roleplayers. To roleplay, all you need to do is invent a character. Your character, depending on the type of roleplay and the original rules set by the starter of the roleplay, can be anything. A flea, an elephant, a wolf, a cat, a dog, a vampire, an imp, a three-headed ocelot with wings...whatever, it is your character. It can even be human! *le gasp* Just make sure it is appropriate to the setting and specified type of roleplay.
Literacy levels of roleplaying: In roleplaying, there are three main levels of literacy. Literate, Semi-literate, and Illiterate. There are major differences between each, and I will attempt to stress the importance as well as the differences. The term literate refers to one who can read and write. Roleplaying uses the term in a similar manner, but in the fabulous world of roleplaying, terms take on new turns and meanings.
Literate: A literate roleplayer, just as described in the English language, can read and write. But this is emphasized in the world of roleplaying to the point of adding well to the end of that definition. Basically, a literate (advanced) roleplayer is considered such when they can: type detailed posts, use correct grammar nearly all of the time, use correct spelling nearly all of the time, make few typos (and when they arise, they are understandable and not a major hindrance), use correct capitalization nearly all of the time, use correct punctuation nearly all of the time, and show definite signs of spending time on their posts. For an example of a literate introduction, please read Literate Introduction later in the guide.
Semi-Literate: A semi-literate roleplayer is neither literate nor illiterate, but trapped in between. They often use the same skills as the literate roleplayer and rarely make mistakes, but what generally separates them is lack of deion. They roleplay well, and are certainly excellent roleplayers for they have shown signs of spending some time on their posts. For an example of a semi-literate introduction, please read Semi-Literate Introduction later in the guide.
Illiterate: Illiterates are far apart from the semi-literate and literates. They often use one-liners, Mary/Gary-Sues, godmode, powerplay, and are despies (all covered later in the guide). Illiterates also normally use a short profile instead of an introduction (covered later, as well), use chatspeak, horrible grammar, little punctuation, terrible spelling, and virtually no description whatsoever. For an example of an illiterate introduction, please read Illiterate Introduction later in the guide.
Descriptions: You are now your character. Your character is every bit as much you, as you are your character. Become your character. What does he/she look like? What does he/she do? How does he/she act? How does he/she do it? Why does he/she do it? What does your character do? Think? Say? How does your character feel? Why? You are now your character and the only way to portray yourself is to describe it. Be your character to its full extent. Describe the scenery around your character and how that affects him/her. Vivid details are your friends. For an example of deion, please read Deion later in the guide.
Despie: Despie is short for desperate. Simple as that. The two most common are romance despies and attention despies. For symptoms of what to look for in a despie, please see Despie Symptoms later in the guide.
Mary/Gary-Sues: Mary/Gary Sues (Same thing with and without the hyphen), are perfect characters. Enough said. Characters who don't have flaws are perfect, therefore are Mary/Gary Sues and are often not allowed in a roleplay.
Godmoding and Powerplaying: GM and PP (you can see which is which ) are abbreviations for these terms. The terms are often used together and not allowed in a roleplay. Examples of godmoding (interchangeable with the terms godmodeling and godmodding) and powerplaying (the two are often confused) are as follows: controlling other characters, all powerful characters (which can be considered a Mary/Gary-Sue), and characters which dodge all hits.
Profiles: Profiles are virtually the same thing as introductions/intros (posts used to introduce your character), but in list form. Profiles range in shape and size, and can change in any manner. Sometimes the starter of a roleplay requires one to be filled out and in a certain way. Profiles are also sometimes called list intros and bios. Be sure, when/if (for they aren't always necessary) filling out a profile, to include the name, age, gender, species (if needed), appearance, clothing (if not included in appearance), and personality. You can also add other items including the common likes, dislikes, and other option or anything else you want to add--it is YOUR character and YOUR profile. For examples of profiles, please see Literate Profile, Semi-Literate Profile, and Illiterate Profile later in this guide.

Literate Introduction
Darkness, malice, hatred. Not a sound traced the grounds to prove Life existed. It was instead the sounds of Death. Fate and Destiny tolled the silence with their large hands and strings of weaving. Large paws collided with the moist ground, making no sound in practiced stealth. Masses of blood and fur intertwined within one another to emphasize the ferocity of the creatures which tread upon the land. A low snarl rose from the depths of the dual throats, lips curling backward to reveal the tips of the ivories which hung like stalagmites and sister stalactites within a cavern--a cavern where you may enter, but never return.
Anger, forgotten, of the past. Brother and sister traversed the forbidding lands together. The low snarls of each creature joined and weaved together to form one sound of the uttermost hatred. Four golden eyes spooked from the shadows under the canopy of trees. Golden eyes watched intently...Daring something to come near. Two of the eyes were clouded by a misty veil, causing the eyes to be more of a dull honey than their rightful golden shade. The grey wolf coat was tinged with an ash color, the paws and tail covered in browns, sables, and deep mahogany. White flecks embedded themselves amongst the pelt of the unceasing creature whom continued forward. Prowess accompanying the spiteful canine. Shadows enveloped both this creature and the lupine at her side--shivers not felt in the darkness which they called their home. Unsupressed was the deep rumbling sound from her throat; though no barks or howls would come from the fea who had never been inflicted by human hands--yet destroyed in the ears by their sticks of thunder and death.
Menacing, vexed, hating. Threatening and torturous, the male who walked at his sister's side was simply as silent as her. He walked in the darkest of shadows which were offered by the trees above. His heart did not contain a soul, but merely pumped the life-providing liquid through his body. Had his soul truly been there, it did not reap in grief or happiness; nor did it hold the feelings of instinct. The brute was in charge of his own actions, and rarely did regular instinct push him forward. He had substituted the reality of other wolves with his own--his intentions always that of ill worth. His life had been affected by the humans--but not had they directly harmed him. Instead he moved onward with his life, anything which held the scent of human destroyed; his history shunned; anything which got in his way executed and punished for such a wrong-doing.
Sinister, toxic, undying. The two had long ago left behind their history. Long ago, the duo had given it up to the winds and continuously dared it to speak it out in its superfluous callings. But not did the wind taunt them with their history, for the wind would have been torn between the deadly jaws. Death hung in the atmosphere with every step they took; and the two were inclined to believe it was for good reason. It was just these two siblings and it had always been. Neither trusting another, neither wishing to hold mercy upon another. A fight taking place in their wake. Let the others tremble and the two would progress without a thought of guilt. They had no conscience, not a feeling of right and wrong. The two did as they pleased, taunting another to stop them. The last putrid one whom had hindered them no longer walked the Earth, but lay rotted beneath the surface of the ground--eaten away at by insects and other creatures of who knows what. Mercury and Phoenix.
NO STEALING. Okay, so this isn't the best example of a literate intro, but it's good enough. I'll have a better one soon. Descripion, few mistakes, my own style is evident, they have a weakness (loss of hearing, bulkiness), you get the point. NO STEALING! I created Phoenix and Mercury from the start, and she is my femora and he is my brute. You even dream of stealing them and I'll hunt you down! From every weakness to every strength; from every detail to every marking; from every part of their history to their current. They are my wolves and no one knows them like I do. They are my wolves and two of my favorite characters. Please respect my wishes and grant me the dignity and honor of keeping them in my possession. DO NOT STEAL PHOENIX OR MERCURY!

Semi-Literate Introduction
A small child roamed the streets. The child knew it was dangerous, where she was. That was why her face was stained with tears; tears coming from her hazel, and blue eyes. Her blonde hair stuck to the water on her face as it swayed to and fro as she forced her slim body to run. She was tired and weak, but she forced herself to run, to run home, and deliver the package she was holding. She hid her star under the package. But her package was no where to be seen, for she had stuffed it under her tattered and torn dark navy blue jacket. She heard someone coming, and she ran faster, until she saw a tree in sight. She glanced at it, and ran behind it. She was too weak to climb it. She stood behind the tree breathing hard. Ears straining to listen.
She breathed a sigh of relief as the man walked past her, not noticing her slim body covered by the tree. As soon as she was sure the man left, she walked out behind the tree and ran again. She ran hard, faster than before, just barely able to drag herself in the door to her house. But when she got to her house, she didn't recognize it. It was in pieces. Door open, half off the hinges. Kitchen overturned; table upside down, drawers open, chairs thrown. She ran across to her room. Her desk drawers had been open, and a few papers had been scattered, but other than that, it was pretty much the same. The only thing missing was her family. The tears that had recently stopped flowing began again. She couldn't believe it. They had taken her family away from her.
Once again no stealing. Can you see the difference in my intros? This one lacks the depth of deion and details in it that the other one had.
No stealing. This is the only and last of my semi-literate introductions that I have saved, and I wish not to depart with it. This was created for a WWII/Holocaust roleplay, and, obviously, this girl was a part of the Holocaust (no insinuations meant as she is fictional). Alrighty, then, NO STEALING.

Illiterate Introduction
she wakt threw the medo 2 him
I don't recommend stealing it, but you can for all I care. I have no use for it and it was off the top of my head. This is a prime example of an illiterate intro/post. There's no work or thought process in this post, I don't know who she is, I don't know who he is, I see no capitalization or punctuation, there is chatspeak, and there are spelling issues. By definition of roleplaying, this doesn't seem like an exciting roleplay.

Description
Her name was Cindy Lee. What a name it was. Everyone from her other school called her by her middle name, however, for fear that she would tear the flesh off their bones. Besides, “Cory”, her middle name, was more to her liking than the girly “Cindy” or even “C.L.”. Most of the time, though, it was just “Cor”. Sometimes people laughed, but she stifled them with a fist to the gut. She was a hard ‘Cor’ tomboy with the ‘Cor’ of a rotten apple as an attitude. Cor had always hated her given name, that was clear. For this fierce tom-boyish female got her message through, and didn’t care whom she hurt in the process. She never stood still and was always prepared for the fight that was coming her way from someone ignorant enough to challenge her. Her brown eyes gave off an icy stare that may have been the very berg that destroyed the titanic; this of which, no one dared to return. She had the boniest cold shoulder, which she would stick in your rib without a moment’s hesitance, that one would ever meet. Yet her girlish blonde hair flew behind her in the wind, as if it were the laughter she never showed signs of, even as it was pulled back in a graceful ponytail. It wasn’t her wish to have the girly appearance, for she was thin, and purely of pale complexion. One would say she was sickly underweight, if she wouldn’t knock them across the jaw with an uppercut strong enough to cease the craving of blood from a vampiric demon of the night—much like the one she was believed to be.
Of course, Cindy Lee went on a ‘three strikes, you’re out’ sort of basis. The first time you called her ‘Cindy Lee’, or said something she disliked, she would state such, with an undetectable sneer. The second time, it was a shrill growl that she allowed to penetrate her throat as she asked; and the third time she would send a 250lb football player crying to his mother. It was a fair warning to her, besides, Cory promised never to start a fight, although she knew what she wanted, and she let it be known without fear.
Cory wasn’t completely as demented as she may seem, for she received good grades in school, and was highly athletic. However, she wasn’t the best at anything. She sat in the back of the classroom, so as not to be seen, although she did do her assignments. She was not the most intellectual, although, no one cared to attempt to call her by the sense of a stereotypical blonde—out of fear, never noticing, or through knowledge of her intellect; fear being the most worthy and withstanding cause.
Being a gymnast, as well as a Kung Fu artist, Cory was exceptionally strong—even more so as she was a mere 100 pounds, severely underweight, and all muscle. A swift tongue with as much muscles as the girl had, hid in the female’s mouth, lasing out like a whip when she allowed it to do such.
Once again, you guessed it: NO STEALING. Alright, so I've described Cindy Lee, as you can see, and you now have a good image of her and her personality. You don't know too much other, but that's alright for the first part of it. Look at all the details and adjectives and adverbs. Woww...
Cindy Lee is MY character. She originated in a story I am writing, and I eventually pulled out a bit about her and edited, etc. to make her into a roleplaying character. Steal her and I will hunt you down. She is as dear to me as Phoenix is. Don't you dare steal her. I came up with her, I have created her, I have worked out the little twirks in her and now she is just the way I want her. Why? Because she is MY character. I'm all for sharing and stuff, but honestly, she's MY character.

Despie Symptoms
Be careful, they're out there. Looking for YOU.
Romance Despies: Romance despies are users who are eager to see romance and attempt to get such through roleplaying with their characters. Signs: Profiles describing the characters as hott, extremely well-built, cutie, popular, etc., characters flirting with every character of the opposite gender, and sometimes even listing their characters marital status as single and looking can be signs of a romance despie (though not always).
Attention Despies: Just like romance despies, the attention despies are eager for attention. They want to be the center of attention at all times. Signs: Numerous injuries, hysterical sobbing, mood swings, horrendous temper flashing when no one seems to bother with that particular character, always being hurt, and being the most popular and the 'hottest' (yes, they are also signs of a romance despie) can be signs of an attention despie.
There are other symptoms, but those are the most common.

Literate Profile
Name: Shinez.
Gender: Female.
Mother: Kalyuin.
Father: Fioch.
Siblings: Phoenix, Mercury (Both being older).
Mate: None.
Pup(s): None.
Personality: Shinez can be kind, but she has a fiery disposition. She recognizes alphas as being dominant, but she shows no determination of being submissive, only respectful. She is relatively friendly, and often trusts before deceives. Shinez is certainly a snow covered rock--one who is soft on the outside and can be melted, but then, there is something hard on the inside no matter what.
Likes: Shinez has a bit of a soft spot for pups without a mother and she loves to fight. Alphas and betas are her main targets for battling. Why? Because they're the only one who will give her a challenge. Omegas and others are tossed aside and she heads straight for the alphas. Her small size doesn't affect her much.
Dislikes: Desperate wolves, humans, abusing mothers, fires, and guns/thunder-sticks.
Strengths: Her mind works quickly and she can devise and formulate a plan of any sort within moments given any situation--and has been doing so since she was a youngrster. She may be small, but she moves like a dart (therefore is addressed as the Gaelic term 'Dairt' by her sister, Phoenix). She's had a rough life like most loners and this motivates her to stay strong. Shinez, though normally kind, will fight when she wills to; and when she does battle, she battles until there seems to be no end--courage and determination, nothing less.
Weaknesses: Shinez is very small, and her mind works differently than other wolves. She often is trying to decide between two parts of her insides...That demon within and which runs through her veins, and that soft spot inside...
As you can see, I have the essentials as well as the other information which is important to my character. Lots of detail. NO STEALING. Shinez is my first wolf character, and I intend to keep her. There are also other items I could have included in this, such as her history, 'other', attributes, and appearance. I left out her appearance in this one, because I would normally accompany it with her introduction, or describe her later on in other posts.

Semi-Literate Profile
Name: Cindy Lee Cory Lousche
Nickname(s): Cor, Cory
Age: No one knows. She looks to be between fifteen and eighteen years of age; but, oddly enough, she tells no one her age.
Gender: Female
Likes: Animals, writing, sports.
Dislikes: People.
Personality: Cory is the most fiery person you'll ever meet. She can handle any sort of gun (rifles, pistols, whatever), daggers, swords, knives, bows, anything and everything. She loves a good fight. Handing Cory a weapon is the most dangerous thing in the world next to upsetting her. Angering Cory is easy, but don't you dare try it or you'll get a fist through your teeth. She fights dirty and can master any weapon as soon as she holds it. She kicks, punches and hits. She bites and scratches, too. She gave up pulling hair (unless for manuevering purposes) and breaking nails a long time ago. Be ware.
No stealing. I have a much better profile for Cindy, but this is a good example of a semi-literate profile. Less details, but it still has the essentials. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this profile.

Illiterate Profiles
Name: Sam
Age: 23
Not only do we not know how this character looks, what he or she likes and dislikes, or his or her personality, but we don't know the gender! Sometimes it's alright to leave out the gender in a profile, such as if the name was 'Sally', but try not to leave it out.
Name: Sam
Age: 23
Looks: Hott
Okay, so...we now know that this is a despie, yes? Why? Because of his/her appearance. We still don't know the gender. Just a key: illiterates don't usually use the word 'appearance'.
Name: Sam
Age: 23
Looks: Hott
Guy
What? You expected to see 'male'? Not with an illiterate.
Name: Sam
Age: 23
Looks: Hott
Guy
Popular
Okay, so he is an attention and romance despie. Sometimes you may get profiles that don't have a colon to tell you what what is and you get something like the following.
Sam
23
Guy
Hott
Popular
Girls and football and cheerleaders
books
Stupid, eh? Don't know what's what? Hmm? Yeah, my point too.
Sam
Age: 23
Guy
Hott
Is: Popular
Wants: a gf
Looking for: a hott girl to be his gf.
What are wrong with these people? Seriously, the rp (roleplay) world is scary. You have people who come up with ridiculous categories to add to their profile, and you still know virutally nothing about the character. Let's analyze this one:
1. Okay, so just a guess: The character's name is Sam.
2. Either Sam is a guy or likes/dislikes guys.
3. Maybe he/she is hott...or he likes/dislikes hott. O.o?
4. Okay...so something is popular. Maybe that has to do with Sam? I don't know...
5. He/She wants a gf. Eh, gf is girlfriend, so...okay...
6. Self explanatory.
Analysis complete: Illiterate romance/attention despie. ALERT! ALERT!
You get the point, yes? I hope you can see the differences between each of the categorizations of roleplays and roleplayers.
A few more things: I won't talk about slash here, just learn it from someone else. I hope this has been helpful to you, and, if not, please let me know. Please tell me if you would like me to help you improve your posts, or if you need more tips. Third: When you are roleplaying, 'OOC:' stands for 'Out of character/content/context:' and 'IC:' stands for 'In character/content/context:' as 'BIC:' simply adds the word 'Back' before that. Last thing, OOC/(B)IC can be substituted for double brackets/parenthesis '[[ ]]', '{[ ]}', '[{ }]', '(( ))' The last one being the most common.
Any questions? Please let me know.
