AGH! I'm so sick and tired of hearing what the government should and shouldn't do. From what I believe, the government should only interfere in our lives enough to keep us safe. Nothing more. So, arresting a murder: go ahead and do that. I understand. He/She has killed someone, and shouldn't be allowed to walk around freely having the willpower to murder.
BUT
Marriage? Come on! Man+Woman, Man+Man, Woman+Woman, whatever! If you are religious and think it's wrong to have a homosexual marriage, that's wonderful, go ahead and not marry someone of the same sex but DO NOT go ahead and tell others not to. If you are really that against people sinning, then what kind of person are you? I clearly remember a verse in the bible, by your beloved Jesus, said "Let he without sin through the first stone." No one remembers that? Really? It was a big verse at my bible school -___- Not to mention, what the hell does it have to do with you if Jeff and George marry? Oh, they're souls are doomed to hell, whoopie-do, you go to heaven.
This goes for about any kind of religious action people try to take upon themselves. If God really, REALLY didn't want people to commit sins, he wouldn't allow free will or he would burn you on the spot wouldn't he? C'mon!
Alright, sorry, I got off-topic. IN summary: the government shouldn't depict who can marry who, religion convictions or not. We are the land of the free, aren't we? I get sick when I hear it's against 'law'. What law?
Now, you may post up your opinions. I'm up for any argument, or kudos.

I personally believe that it should be a state's decision and not the government. On social issues it should always be the state's decision. That way the people can pretty much decide. And also you can go to another state if your's does not allow it. That's pretty much how I feel about abortion also. It should be the state's decision and not the federal government. My only thing about the gay "marriage" is that they should call it civil union instead. Otherwise I don't care. My uncle is gay and I could care less. Same with a female cousin of mine. I love them all. :3

Anyways, good point there. I was saying government as a whole, state and national.

Haha. I'm pretty straight... xDD You can't get me away from my Jake!!!
I don't care. Really. Just let it be a state's decision. All social issues should be decided by the states.

What I'm saying, is go out of state for the "marriage" or abortion and come back. No problems there.

I don't that that should be up to the government at all. I think it should be a church's decision. If a church doesn't want gay marriage, then they shouldn't have to perform one. But if a church does want to perform them, then they should be allowed to. And there are plenty of churches that will do that. Onlt about 30-45 minutes from my house there is a church that is aimed at the gay community in my area.
But I would be cool with a civil union, as long as it awarded me the same rights as any other straight couple.

Yeah. I don't think the federal government should be in it at all. It should be a state's decision whether or not it is allowed, and even then that's pushing it. I agree that it should be the church or synagogues decision whether or not to allow it. That would be good enough, imho. And everyone should have the same rights. Though, I still think that it should be a state's decision, though I would rather the government stay out of it.

Well, what if a state agrees to it, but there are a bunch of churches that disagree with it, but are now being forced to allow it, you know?
I don't like people pushing their beliefs on me, and, while I would disagree with a church not allowing gay marriage, it's not my place, or anyone else's place to say that they have to. So, since this is a religious thing, it should be left to the religious people.
Seperation of church and state.

To all debating the state issues:
It shouldn't be up to the state. The Constitution only says what you can't do, not what you can. That's how law works in the United States.
I agree. It's a church's decision who they marry and who they don't, but marriages made by state shouldn't be gender discriminative.

I agree Warp. I really do.
There are some things that the government are never going to stay out of. This is one of those issues.
I guess you could say I'm more of a libertarian than anything.
I hate the government. When you let it get big it's going to be destroyed. Small government with state's rights is the way to go.

Yeah. That's why I hope that either Hillary Clinton of Barack Obama get into office. Barack Obama is down with gay marriage, he supports it. And Hillary Clinton is at least in favor of Civil Unions with complete federal benefits like any other straight marriage.

Well, yes, but that's why you have to slap a large government a few times and it should be humble again. It's somewhat new, our government, if you think about it. It needs to get brought down a little, though, along with our population....

Warp, Obama wants to invade Pakistan, our ally. Hillary is a socialist. She'd destroy the country. I like Fred Thompson. He believes all social issues should be a state's decision. He was a senator for 10 years before becoming an actor. ;]
Todsengel, I think the population is fine. Compare us to China and we are tiny. See, originally we were a REPRESENTATIVE REPUBLIC. Because of corruption and voter fraud the elections have been destroyed. I would gladly count paper ballots just so we could have a fair election.
Gah. Too tired to type a full post. xD

We are using up too much resources, but that's far from this topic.
And yes, we should try to get things back to how they were...things are too complex now-a-days.

I was in China for 10 days. I loved it over there. But I didn't get to see the government at work. Anyways, they are killing themselves with their one child policy. I don't think we are using up too many resources...
There is going to be a civil war soon. The country is very divided. In this moment in time we need to be UNITED as one, or divided we shall fall.
I'm a conservative federalist libertarian. xD

If that could be taken care of, we'll be fine. Otherwise, we're screwed.
True, but I don't see a civil war coming soon. Maybe a rebellion or protest, but not a civil war.

He actually wants to go into Pakistan as well as Afghanistan, which, really wouldn't be all too bad. It's better than our troops being in Iraq. Let's face it, most of the terrorists we need to catch, like Osama, are in those mountains in Afghanistan and Pakistan, or so it's believes. Right now, we need to be out of Iraq. I actually made a nice, medium sized mpost about this on Gaia earlier, and had a one hour discussion with my step dad on this, yesterday.
And how is Hillary a Socialist?
